EQM

An Earthquake Memorial Museum proposed for the Evans Bay site, located in the Wellington Harbour.

Earthquakes have immense significance in New Zealand and thus a sensitive and commemorative design was proposed. The design features a very particular and considered emotional journey for users as they travel through the spaces in a linear fashion.

The journey starts with a falling water memorial, names engraved around the feature as the initial moment is open for the public. As the users enter, a suspended bridge over a gallery subconsciously reflects a feeling of isolation and fear. This is something the victims might have experienced during the crisis. Finally, users finish in the cafe with a view over the harbour as they reflect back on the lives of those lost.
